Anything that Dale Benam or Max Ledyard would come to Hamburg NY with was exciting to watch. Especially if they both showed up!!!

That is a no brainer for me. Years ago going to horsepulls here in New England with my parents my favorite was Ed Crowell's Tom & Diamond team driven by Dan Reed. They were the most dominate team I ever saw. If they showed up they seemed to win everytime. I recall one day witnessing the Hi-V Ranch team driven by Harold Montgomery beating Tom & Diamond in Durham. I was devastated. Didn't matter that the Hi-V team was much bigger then Tom & Diamond. I couldn't believe that they had been beaten. I'm sure they had been beaten before but to an 8-9 year old kid who admired them so it was hard to see them lose.

Bill & Tom. No doubt an outstanding team of horses. But Tom & Diamond accomplished one thing that Bill & Tom did not. They went out to Michigan and won the National Championship. Quite an accomplishment for a 6 foot team from the East. I believe the only other time that a heavyweight team from New England has gone out to Michigan and won the National Championship was when Dan Reed did it again twenty years later with Bob & Scottie.

I think Chuck Shaafs Barney and Don where maybe the best middleweight pair in the country back in the late 80s and early 90s. Barney was one of the great pulling horses of all time.

They were a awesome pair of horses, that once in a lifetime kind of team we all dream of owning. Both horses are buried on Schaaf's hill side on the farm they loved with each having huge head stones in their memory. These two horses truly loved this man as he loved them in the same way!
