The late Mr. Moxley, Extension Specialist in Animal
Husbandry at Michigan State College, (now Michigan State University) persuaded
the college to purchase a dynamometer from Iowa State College in 1924 for
research purposes. A second purchase was made in 1925. Harry Moxley
traveled with the dynamometer from 1924 to 1960.
The "Voice of Authority", Mr. Moxley was trained in
agricultural engineering, knew the operation of the dynamometer, supervised the
measure men, timekeeper, scorekeeper, measured and weighed the teams, talked
with drivers and spectators about collar fitting, harnessing, shoeing and
maintained a running fire of comments between pulls and when the truck was being
moved.
The Michigan Dynamometer Association held a special after
the fair pull in 1948 at the Hillsdale Fairgrounds. Both dynamometers were
used to place over 100 teams. Mr. Moxley was the man in charge,
announcing, keeping two machines running at the same time and keeping order.
Mr. Moxley's deep unforgettable voice could frequently be
heard saying, "Boys you've got a great looking team, park them right up here
where everyone can see them"! The man in charge did not tolerate
unsportsmanlike behavior.
